Quinnox Helped a Leading Automotive Manufacturer with Secure, Efficient and Compliant Sterling Integrator Middleware Upgrade

Qinfinite-Chaos-Engineering

About the Client

A major American company in the automotive aftermarket, chemical products, and related industries. Headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, it is one of the largest privately held companies in the automotive aftermarket sector.

Business Challenges

As a global leader in automotive and industrial fluids with operations across more than 60 countries, the client relies on a highly resilient and efficient supply chain powered by IBM Sterling B2B Integrator (versions 5.2.x and 6.1.x) to support its B2B ecosystem. However, the organization was operating on legacy versions of the platform with end-of-support (EOS) ending in April 2026, after which IBM will no longer provide security patches, updates, or technical assistance.

This impending EOS introduced significant operational and security risks. With 99.3% on-time delivery as a critical performance metric, even minor system downtime or transaction delays could result in shipment disruptions, strained partner relationships, loss of customer trust, and revenue impact.

The challenge was further compounded by the need to upgrade a business-critical B2B platform without disrupting ongoing global operations, requiring a modernization approach that ensured continuity, minimized risk, and aligned with long-term scalability and security objectives.

While the upgrade is a strategic necessity to avoid support gaps and enable modern capabilities, the primary challenges revolved around:

1. Compatibility and Technical Complexity
Upgrades often require specific JDK versions, updated Installation Manager (IIM), and compatible OS and database configurations. Legacy setups that do not meet these requirements can lead to installation failures.

Additionally, certain obsoleted features and adapters may require manual file adjustments post-upgrade.

2. Validation and Testing Risks
Comprehensive regression testing is essential across all trading partner connections, EDI documents, mappings, and communication protocols (API, AS2, SFTP, FTP, VAN, etc.). Undetected issues could delay shipments, impact fleet customers and retail partners, and disrupt payment cycles, causing potential revenue loss. Further, phased testing and proactive partner communication are critical to mitigate these risks.

3. Specialized Expertise Requirements
Upgrades demand deep Sterling B2B Integrator expertise, often necessitating external partners for health checks, migration planning, and execution to ensure a smooth transition.

4. Time and Cost Constraints
Upgrades especially to higher versions like 6.2+ require detailed assessments, fresh installations, data migration, and careful cutover planning. These factors often extend timelines and increase project costs, posing challenges to maintaining business continuity.

The Quinnox Solution

With deep expertise across all current versions of IBM Sterling B2B Integrator (including installation, upgrades, development and ongoing support in windows and Linux Environment), Quinnox happened to be the natural and most experienced partner for client’s required upgrade ahead of the April 30, 2026, end of standard support for version 5.2.x and 6.1.x.

Quinnox helped the client with:

      • Comprehensive upgrade services, including environment assessments, compatibility checks, configuration migration, testing, and post-upgrade optimization.
      • Managed services for end-to-end B2B/EDI management.
      • Around-the-clock support, cost-effective solutions, and IBM-certified consultants familiar with Client’s specific setup.

This continuity helped minimize risks, leverage existing knowledge of clients custom maps, business processes, and integrations – ensuring a smooth transition to modern features like enhanced security, better performance, and hybrid/cloud readiness.

Business Benefits Delivered

  • Helped upgrade from the current version (6.1.x) to IBM Sterling B2B Integrator 6.2.x delivering significant strategic, operational, and financial advantages. This is especially valuable for client, ensuring 99.3% on-time delivery, and ongoing growth through expansions planned in 2026.
  • Helped the client avoid the April 30, 2026, end of standard support for 6.1.x, eliminating exposure to unpatched vulnerabilities, no new fixes, and limited technical assistance and ensured full IBM vendor support, critical security patches, and compliance alignment for regulated chemical/transport data.
  • Business Process as a Service: Exposed processes as RESTful APIs for easier integration with other apps and upgraded JDK for better performance.
  • Saved $50000 – $200000 for the client.
